Media & Entertainment Law

Media and Entertainment Law is a growing niche area, and one in which a wide variety of contentious and non-contentious issues arise. As well as covering issues arising from Intellectual Property law (particularly Copyright), this elective will introduce students to common contractual transactions involving parties in the entertainment and media fields (particularly the music industry), and common dispute sources (including defamation).

The approach taken is primarily a commercial one rather than a technically legal one. The External Examiner has praised the course for "the use of cutting edge documentation and scenarios in media which undoubtedly made this a particularly rewarding subject for study".

Much of the media industry is self-regulated, so students will need to be familiar with not just statute and case law, but also codes and regulations promulgated by some bodies relevant to the industry.

The content of the full-time and part-time course is identical, but they are structured differently.
