GDL course structure

The course is structured into two teaching blocks to cover the
7 Foundations of Legal Knowledge identified by the
professional bodies plus an independently researched project.
Year 1
Weekend study - 3 consecutive days at UWE, Bristol followed by 5
weekend sessions at your chosen regional centre.

- Public Law
Year 2
Weekend study - 3 consecutive days followed by 5 weekend
sessions. All Year 2 sessions will be held at your chosen regional
centre.

- Property Law
- Law of the EU
- Independent Research Project (IRP)
Teaching and learning
In each of the 2 years there will be an introductory
session of 3 days. The year 1 introductory session in
September will be held on the UWE campus,Bristol. There are
then 5 sessions between October and May held at weekends. Each
of the 5 sessions will cover 2 days. During these
sessions there will be intensive seminars, lectures and workshops,
and the opportunity to discuss individual issues with both
personal and academic tutors.
Assessment
Students have examinations in all 7 foundation subjects and
coursework in some of those subjects. You will be assessed by:
- A one hour 30 minute English Legal System assessment
(pass/fail)
- A three hour 30 minute exam in 3 foundation subjects
- A two hour 30 minute exam (worth 75% of the subject mark) and
coursework (25%) in the other 4 foundation subjects
- An Independent Research Project of up to 5,000 words
(pass/fail)
You would have 3 attempts at all assessments if required,
but the overall pass rate for the GDL at the first attempt is
normally in the region of up to 90%.
Around 50% - 60% of students pass the GDL with a Merit or
Distinction
(Results based on UWE Bristol students)
